The Root Causes

The food emergency is an indication of a food framework in emergency. Terrible climate, high oil costs, agrofuels, and hypothesis are just the proximate reason for a deeper, systemic issue. The underlying driver of the emergency is a worldwide food framework that is profoundly powerless against economic and ecological stun. This powerlessness springs from the dangers, inequities, and externalities inborn in food frameworks that are commanded by a worldwide mechanical agri-foods complex. Fabricated over the past half-century—to a great extent with open trusts for grain subsidies, remote support, and global horticultural improvement the modern agri-foods complex is made up of multinational grain dealers, goliath seed, substance, and compost organizations, processors, and worldwide grocery store chains.

Some African Countries Pushing for Tougher Anti-Gay Laws

DAKAR — Nigeria‘s president has signed into law a bill that bans gay marriage, gay rights advocacy and public displays of affection between same-sex couples.  Homosexual acts were already illegal in Nigeria.  Human rights activists say the new law reflects a larger trend to ramp up anti-gay legislation and penalties.

Israel Gave Birth Control to Ethiopian Immigrants Without Their Consent

In January 2013, Israel acknowledged that medical authorities have been giving Ethiopian immigrants long-term birth-control injections, often without their knowledge or consent. The Israeli government had previously denied the charges, which were first brought to light by investigative reporter Gal Gabbay in a December 8, 2012, broadcast of Israeli Educational Television’s news program, Vacuum. In January, the Israeli Health Ministry’s director-general, Ron Gamzu, ordered all gynecologists to stop administering the drugs.
